#Session 1 - Mass migration from Myanmar: the aftermath of the longest civil war in the world (10/10/2024)

Student Hosts: A group of Myanmar students in HKU

Over the years, Mae Sot, a city on the Thailand-Myanmar border, has hosted different kinds of migrants: refugees, migrant workers, migrant students, politicians, armed groups, and most recently, people who had to flee from the conscription law. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they all share one thing in common: forced mass displacement. If you had the chance to talk to different people on the streets of Mae Sot, you would learn that many of them carry the pain of leaving their homes involuntarily to seek temporary shelter in Mae Sot, with the hope of returning home soon. However, their wishes have not been fulfilled for more than 70 years. Recently, Myanmar has seen a large number of migrants again due to the 2021 military coup. Since then, students have been unable to attend school, and after enduring months of military atrocities, protests have escalated into armed resistance. As a result of the ongoing conflicts and the recently announced conscription law, the country is experiencing a greater wave of mass migration, in other words, a larger number of forced mass displacements.

In this session, a group of Myanmar students will lead the discussion on the underlying causes for Myanmar people to migrate and the challenges they face as involuntary migrants abroad.
