Required Reading:
Filled with true devotion
Young love, our love
We share with deep emotion”
- Young Love by Sonny James
No other work of literature explores this theme more cogently than Shakespeare’s play on the two star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. It may well be the most widely read Shakespearian play, and moved generations of young men and women over the centuries. It has also spawned many adaptations in different artistic media - including opera, musicals and films – as well as reimaginations in a more modern context – one such is, of course, West Side Story, one of the most successful musicals ever.
In this book club, you will, in enriching your reading experience, be able to enjoy the full screening of the opera Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod (in French with sub-titles), performed at The Metropolitan Opera of New York, as well as the filmed version of West Side Story, which won 10 Oscars including “Best Picture”. There will also be other audiovisual elements to stimulate your senses.
The edition of Romeo and Juliet we have chosen for your reading pleasure puts Shakespeare’s language side-by-side with a facing page of translation into modern English, so that you will have no difficulty in reading and understanding the dialogue. The version of West Side Story is a “novelization” by Irving Shulman, based on the Broadway musical screen play.
