Summer Opera: I live for art, I live for love

While many university curriculums tend to overlook the importance of exploring classical art forms like opera, we believe it is essential to broaden our horizons. That's why we have curated an extraordinary series of sessions, designed to ignite enthusiasm and appreciation for opera among all students, whether seasoned opera aficionados or newcomers to this genre.

After a successful launch of the Opera Soiree series in the 1st semester 2023-24, we continue with our exploration of the (Western) operatic art form this summer in the opera verismo tradition. This year marks the 100th death anniversary of the renowned Italian composer, Giacomo Puccini. In commemoration of this milestone, we have chosen to screen two of his most popular and frequently performed operas, Tosca and La Boheme.

Session#1 Tosca (15/6, Sat, 14:30 – 18:00)
A tale of political intrigues and evil villains, mixed with a fiery love affair ending with tragedy in Rome at the dawn of the 19th century.

Session#1 - Register Here (HKU Students only)

Session#2 La Boheme (27/6, Thu, 18:00 – 21:00)
The Bohemian life for artists and writers in fin de siecle Paris may sound romantic, but reality – money to keep oneself alive, and jealousy – intrudes, and a beautiful dream ends in tears.

Session#2 - Register Here (HKU Students only)

Both operas featured are drawn from the Metropolitan Opera (New York) archives, made available for screening at HKU courtesy of the Foundation for the Arts and Music in Asia (FAMA). Both featured English subtitles, and lasts for just over 3 hours (with one intermission).
