Online application becomes more and more popular for graduate trainee and internship position application. It helps the employer to initially screen out those who are not interested in the job and who are impatient in filling out the form. It also eases the recruiters’ effort by collecting all relevant data in a centralised system and matching candidates' competencies by computer filtering functions.
Tips for completing online application
- Submit on time - Do not wait until the last 3 - 5 hours before the deadline. High traffic will jam the system at peak hours. Submit a few days ahead.
- Tailor your content - Do not just copy and paste from CV samples. Make sure the tailored changes are checked with care and are addressing to the correct company and position.
- Use keywords - First sorting and screening could be done by keywords (multiple words) search in some systems and processes. To increase your hit rate:
- Analyse the requirements, duties, and responsibilities of the job notice.
- Use matching keywords, buzz words, and industry / trade words, use some of the words in the job notice when you state your experience, activities, and achievements
- Include numbers and statistics - Include numbers and statistics in your experience, activities, and achievements, e.g.
- Answered 50 customers’ enquiries daily.
- Helped HKU Drama Club raise HK$20,000 in summer 2019 by (your action plan).
- Follow instructions - Pay attention and follow the instructions carefully. Complete all fields.
- Allow yourself sufficient time to complete. Note whether the online system allows you to draft, save, amend, and submit until you are satisfied with your answer.
- Attach your CV - Some online applications require attachment of CV or pasting it onto the webpage. Make sure your CV remains in a simple format for these electronic conversion / attachments.
- Proof-read your application before submission.
- Follow-up - If you do not get an electronic confirmation, follow-up your electronic application with a personal email to the recruiter. (Try to identify the name and email, if not, send it to the recruitment manager stating briefly your name, university, degree, contact, and date of submission.)
