A Glimpse into the Actuarial Profession

A Glimpse into the Actuarial Profession

Lau Chak Yin's Story
Faculty of Science
BSc(ActuarSc)

In 2018, Mark, a year 3 Actuarial Science student, undertook a half-year internship with AIA International Ltd. While this internship is a capstone for Mark’s degree program, he has definitely gained much more than a few academic credits.

This internship was Mark’s first working experience so he was quite nervous in the beginning, yet the welcoming work culture and friendly colleagues made him feel at home very quickly. Mark was attached to the pricing team of AIA, in charge of User Acceptance Testing and conducting work on Excel.

"The internship has equipped Mark with both technical skills and communication skills."

“AIA is a company that advocates work-life balance, so besides work, I also experienced many other activities.” Mark participated in the Internship Sharing Competition, in which interns presented on a certain topic in front of their colleagues and even the directors. Mark eventually won the first runner-up and was honored to be able to meet with other interns who also participated in the competition, from both AIA International and the AIA Group Office.

The interns were also invited to join along in other joyful activities like the Christmas Party and Monthly Birthday Parties, “We even went to Disneyland for free!”

The internship has equipped Mark with both technical skills and communication skills, which he believes would be difficult to acquire just by attending classes in school. The internship gave Mark a full glimpse into the work of an actuary and inspired him to go out of his comfort zone to try experiencing other job duties as well.
