Campaigning for an Australian MP
Campaigning for an Australian MP
Allen William Montgomery's Story
Faculty of Law
LLB
Monty hails from Australia and studied Law at HKU in 2019. While many HKU students would be travelling after semester ends, Monty was up for something extraordinary - campaigning for the Australian Federal Parliament elections.
Monty grew up in Melbourne and has spent years working as assistant to a Member of Parliament (MP). In the 2019 Australian federal election, Monty has taken part in campaigning for an MP candidate.
While in Hong Kong, Monty mostly did social media-related work for the election campaign while also preparing for the on-site operations on election day. A few days right after his last exam in Hong Kong, Monty flew back to Australia to manage a campaign on the election day. Monty was responsible for one of the polling stations, and headed a team of 15 in promoting his MP candidate at the station.
"Many notions on political processes were taken for granted in Australia, but it is not the case in Hong Kong."
Monty’s time in HKU has given him a brand new perspective on politics back home. Many notions on political processes were taken for granted in Australia, but it is not the case in Hong Kong. This has led him to cherish and reflect on the differences between the political scene of the two places.
Hong Kong and especially HKU are very open places, with “everyone coming from everywhere”. This diversity is something distinctly offered by HKU, has allowed Monty to cross paths with peers and people from various origins and backgrounds.
“If I were to choose again, I would still choose HKU all over again.”
