Sensing the Students with Special Educational Needs

Chu Kairos's Story
Faculty of Business and Economics
BBA(Law)&LLB

Being a member of the organising committee of University YMCA (The University of Hong Kong), Chu Kairos wanted to take this opportunity to give students with special educational needs (SEN) a hand. After witnessing the misunderstanding towards children with SEN among the general public, he decided to initiate a project called “SENsing Nature” which university students had a chance to spend time with students with SEN in farm.

"I have never received such level of attention or care from any children before."

As always, it is easier said than done. Trying to put themselves in the shoes of students with SEN, Kairos and his fellow committee members went to great lengths to prepare suitable games for those students. Since most of the participants had been diagnosed with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Kairos was expecting some hyperactive or impulsive behaviour among them. However, he found himself over-worried. On the event day, he was shocked by how considerate and meticulous they were. Not only did they behave themselves, but they also took the initiative to take care of others. Kairos could still recall how touched he was when those children helped him get mosquito repellent when they were playing games at the farm. “I have never received such level of attention or care from any children before,” he said, with a smile on his face.

He believes that it is more important to “be firm on the ground”, to stay connected to society and to always give when he can. He looks forward to the day he can establish a social enterprise and dedicate his life to serving others.
