From Desert to Green: Environmental Empowerment and Transformation

From Desert to Green: Environmental Empowerment and Transformation

Fok Ka Hei’s Story
Faculty of Science
MSc(EnvMan)

Fok Ka Hei, Kathy, is the student founder of the HKU Climate Ambassador Programme, where she has organised various workshops and field trips. A highlight of her work was leading a service and cultural tour to the Tengger Desert in Ningxia. During this trip, participants planted over 200 trees, built a sand-protection barrier, and engaged in desert trekking, camping, and environmental exploration activities.

Kathy participated in environmental exploration activities, including fruit picking in the garden.

Kathy’s experience in the desert significantly challenged her preconceptions. Reflecting on her journey, she said, "When you hear 'desert,' you might immediately think of a place with limited resources." However, she discovered that China is making great efforts to transform deserts into green spaces. "You can find water anywhere," she noted, highlighting new tourism activities, such as camel rides, that have emerged in the area. This newfound knowledge shifted her perspective and opened her eyes to the possibilities of sustainable development in such environments.

Kathy was preparing the space for planting trees.

Kathy found both impressive experiences and challenges during the trip. She said, “Finding suitable spots for planting trees is difficult, as many areas were already full.” This is likely due to the need for effective tree management, such as regular planting.

Kathy (the second one on the right) was planting trees with her partners.

After the trip, she reflected on the balance between development and nature, stating, "We shouldn’t copy city conveniences in the desert; we need to keep nature natural." This shows her concern for protecting the desert's ecosystem. However, she still believes it is important to introduce desertification management to more people.

Ultimately, Kathy’s original intention with the Climate Ambassador Programme is clear: “Environmental education is crucial. Despite technology advancements and the pressing nature of climate change, many people still prioritise convenience over environmental action.” This realisation has motivated her to actively promote environmental education, inspiring a shift in societal attitudes toward sustainability and encouraging individuals to take initiative in protecting the environment.
