Girls Takeover 2023: A Stage to Shine My Own Light
In recent decades, women empowerment has been a leap forward for women to unleash their full potential to create a more inclusive society. Suen Wai Chi, Kimmy, a final year Social Work student, leveraged the opportunity in the Girls Takeover 2023 campaign, which was co-organised by Plan International Hong Kong and Kimberly-Clark, to showcase her power and talent by advocating girls the concepts of “Period Poverty” and “Period Shaming” in primary schools of developing countries. This experience also made her become one of the top 10 awardees of Hong Kong Mingde Outstanding University Students' Award 2023.
In the campaign, Kimmy
“took over” as the General Manager of Kimberly-Clark Hong Kong for a day on the
International Day of Girl Child to gather ideas with colleagues on the brand
strategy roadmap for long-term development. Apart from gaining exposure in
business management as a leader, she proactively engaged in menstruation
education to girls, including content creation of the education booklet on menstruation
for Kotex, a sub-brand of Kimberly-Clark. She also organised education talks in
the form of drama and games to raise the awareness of “Period Poverty” and
“Period Shaming” of students in local primary schools.
During the talk, Kimmy introduced the problems of “Period Poverty” and “Period Shaming” vividly in the form of drama.
As an ambitious girl who
aspires to shine her own light, Kimmy was delighted to have the opportunity to deploy
her knowledge and skills to constitute the future for Kimberly-Clark. “My
involvement in the brainstorming session with my colleagues enabled me to inject
new impetus to the company’s future corporate development, and more
importantly, to inspire my colleagues to think outside the box”, she said.
Kimmy led the brainstorming session where she ignited insightful discussions with her colleagues on the future business development plan as a one-day General Manager of Kimberly-Clark Hong Kong.
Not only was Kimmy grateful to drive innovation in the corporation, but also increased public awareness on the issues of “Period Poverty” and “Period Shaming”. “Through delivering talks and conducting workshops on these momentous issues, I hope I can act as a facilitator to open up the floor for female to actively exchange their views and opinions on such embarrassing topics, and to eliminate stigma from menstruation”, she added.
Kimmy also expressed her
gratitude to the hosting organisations for offering her the chance to shine.
“Without the unwavering support from colleagues of Kimberly-Clark and Plan
International Hong Kong, I would not be able to be exposed to an array of
menstruation-related problems circulating among girls worldwide. Their unflagging
encouragement and constructive feedback have substantially boosted my
confidence and determination to make a difference in the world”.
Kimmy was thankful to Kimberly-Clark and Plan International Hong Kong for giving her a remarkable experience in the Girls Takeover 2023 campaign.
