Cultivating HKU Campus as a Fertile Ground for Engagement
Hurip Ethan’s Story
Our campus is not merely a place for academic pursuit, but also a vibrant community that allows us to make friends, understand cultures, and exchange perspectives in meaningful ways. Hurip Ethan has been an active HKU member to exemplify this ethos through an array of his CEDARS activities. His extensive experiences in emceeing and tutoring have added more colours to his university journey and much of our HKU community.
Ethan enjoys the times when HKU students from diverse backgrounds can get together through various CEDARS events.
Ethan comes from the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, with a very different campus and academic framework. He is eager to connect and engage with the broader community outside his medical sphere. Joining CEDARS has been a vital avenue for him to achieve this. He served as a Peer English Tutor, Peer Cantonese Tutor, and Master of Ceremony in multiple events, like the High Table Dinner and orientation programmes for international students. These occasions made him realise the rich tapestry of our university. He enjoys very much these opportunities that integrate students with diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.
As an opportunist, Ethan (most left) believes in the CEDARS social gatherings that enrich students’ life.
There are certainly challenges for him. He sets high expectations for himself to represent the university, warm up the atmosphere, and make a good impression on the new joiners of our university. Yet, his social dedication and genuineness have always ensured his success in these endeavours. One of his tutees drew him a picture that he treasures deeply. He was also touched to witness how the once timid new joiners, both freshers and exchange students, felt more at ease to mingle with new friends in the events. His spirit has fostered our campus as a fertile ground for engagements.
Ethan (most left) is keen to create a welcoming atmosphere for freshers and international students by making them feel at home.
“University experience is defined by the people and the myriad of interactions that occur outside the classroom.” Ethan firmly believes in after-class experience that encapsulates a purposeful university life. He reminds us that while achieving academic grades is important, it is the connections, shared experiences, and memories that matter most in one’s study journey here.
