Ngan Yun Ki Kate’s Story
Faculty of Engineering
BASc(FinTech)
Like many other university students, Kate is a student who is enthusiastic in looking for an internship. Last summer, she was fortunate to pursue her first internship in the field of Financial Technology (FinTech) through the Summer Job Programme 2021/2022, in which she had to be in charge of doing a technical study on distributed applications such as digital currencies.
“Basically, I was assigned to achieve three goals: to carry out cryptocurrency transactions in python, to complete a report and to give a presentation on the last day of my internship,” revealed Kate.
“I had to learn the mechanism of cryptocurrency from zero.”
Though the tasks might seem simple to other interns who had internship experiences, the case was more complicated for Kate, who had just started to study FinTech for a year. “Being a first year student without any practical job experience in this field, I often found the tasks challenging. For example, I had to learn the mechanism of cryptocurrency from zero.”
Yet, with strong curiosity in cryptocurrency, as well as kind assistance from her mentor and fellow colleagues, Kate was able to overcome the challenges and began to truly enjoy her two-month internship. “I had a huge sense of satisfaction once I was able to complete the tasks,” she admitted.

Indeed, “time and tide wait for no man”. One should not be afraid to embrace new challenges in life. Let’s hope that we can all grasp opportunities to learn and grow!
