Book Club: In Love and War

Book Club: In Love and War

General Education Team
GE Gatherland2001 and/or Conducted via online platform
24 October, 2020
15:00 - 18:00

Required Readings:
• Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
• World War One British Poets: Brooke, Owen, Sassoon, Rosenberg and Others
• All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

War and love are themes from which great epics spring – think Helen of Troy (Iliad). Put them together in modern day language and you have one of the most moving novels on the human experience of World War I (Birdsong) where war and love are interspersed. But, while prose tells a good story, poetry expresses the deepest feelings at the bottom of our hearts best. A reading of World War One British Poets cannot fail to be heart-rending. On the other hand, the German novel All Quiet on the Western Front (published in 1929 but later burnt by the Nazis) reveals the full horror of war from the other side of “no man’s land”. In addition, great music – both classical and popular – has also been inspired by WWI, and we will encounter some of the best in both genres, plus brilliant documentaries on war and its consequences, in history and in culture.
As always, we expect interactive participation by all members of the Book Club.
