Hall Charges:

Please refer to “Fees for Students Residing in Residential Halls, Residential Colleges and Non-hall Housing” on lodging fee charges. The charges of Year 2024-25 would be confirmed by Summer 2024 and will be adjusted.

Application Procedure:

  • Newly admitted non-local students

Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) coordinates placement of newly admitted non-local exchange students and full degree undergraduates into the above-mentioned halls and residences. Interested students can apply for admission during May to August (for students coming in September) and during October to December (for students coming in January) (subject to availability of vacancy) by completing an On-line Hall Application Form for Newly Admitted Non-local students.

After completing the form, computer-generated acknowledgement will be sent to applicants via email.

Exchange/Visiting Students: When you have received your Notice of Admission from your Faculty in this University, please send a copy to CEDARS by email to cedars.housing@hku.hk. You will NOT be offered a place if CEDARS has not received the copy of your Notice of Admission

Full Degree Students admitted through the International / Non-JUPAS Admissions Scheme: You do not need to send copy of admission letter to CEDARS. You will be offered a place if you have firm admission offer.

  • Newly admitted local full degree students and current full degree students

Students have to apply for halls along with the general student population in April (Hall Re-admission Application for current residents) or August (Hall Application for new members) each year. These application exercises are managed by Academic Support and Examinations Section of the Registry, while the decision on admission rests solely with the Wardens of individual halls. Please refer to the announcement of the Registry for the latest application information.

Allocation of Hall Places:

The supply of places at halls of residence is very limited. We cannot promise a place in residential halls or colleges for every new non-local student.

The University has confirmed the adoption of a new policy aimed at promoting integration and cultural exchanges among hallmates. The goal is to enhance the overall student experience and create a more inclusive community. Beginning in the academic year 2024-25, the General Offices of the Residential Halls will assign roommates for newly admitted residents in double or triple rooms, pairing local and non-local students whenever possible. Please note that this policy applies to both new and returning students who have previously lived in another hall.

Students who cannot be allocated a place in halls or colleges will be housed in non-hall student housing managed by CEDARS. In some extreme cases, students would have to look for other housing options like privately rented housing in the vicinity of the University on their own. CEDARS can assist them to find such places.

Notification of Hall Placement Result:

Email notifications of hall application results will normally be sent during the following periods:

- Applications for places in the First Semester or for whole year: from July (to be confirmed)
- Applications for places in the Second Semester: from December (to be confirmed)

If you are offered a place in any of the halls, you need to confirm with your hall manager whether or not you intend to accept the offer. If you choose not to accept the offer or not to respond, the offer will be withdrawn. You are therefore required to make sure that we have got your latest contact email address and you should check your email during the above periods frequently.

Due to limited availability, not all of the applicants will be assigned hall accommodation. Applicants who are not offered any hall or residence will be informed by CEDARS and are advised to look for alternatives. Please refer to PDF on housing outside campus for reference.

Checking in a Hall:

Applicant who is offered a place in the hall will normally be allowed to check into the hall during the following period:

- For the First Semester: from end of August (to be confirmed)
- For the Second Semester: from mid-January (to be confirmed)

Those who have accepted offers are required to confirm with your halls directly on the exact check-in dates and time. Those who fail to do so will cause inconvenience to themselves for they may not be able to check in their halls upon arrival.

For residents who are non-local students choosing to arrive Hong Kong earlier than the check-in dates, they should look for temporary housing outside the campus.

Temporary Housing for Students who Plan to Arrive Earlier:

  • Temporary Housing inside campus

There are a few guest rooms available in some halls for HKU students to stay temporarily. Please refer to Temporary Housing Website for the contact information of the hall offices.

  • Housing outside campus

There are a number of hostels and hotels nearby the campus. Please refer to “List of Hostels and Hotels Nearby HKU” for more information and for reservation.
