GE2024-08
If you think that simultaneous interpretation as a form of conference interpretation only means to master the languages, you may need to think twice! It is not just about one single element but a wide range of knowledge, common sense and daily life experience that contribute to success.
This series of workshops is suitable for all students who are interested in this topic. No prior experience is needed.
Split Attention and Enjoying the Adrenaline
Conference interpreters split their attention by listening carefully to the speakers in one language and interpreting what the speakers say in another, not to mention listening to their own voice for quality assurance. Conference interpreters are arguably human beings with super powers because they are listening, understanding, analyzing and speaking at the same time. The necessary knowledge and skills include an excellent command of at least two languages, responding in a matter of split second, knowledge of the subject matter and relevant terminology, and staying calm while performing to a large audience under very intimidating settings. Participants will find the tool box of a conference interpreter very useful to their study and career development.
“Three seconds is an eternity” for a conference interpreter who must convey the original message accurately and completely without waiting. The job is stressful, and well-paid of course. Once you have acquired the skills and knowledge for handling a mass of facts under pressure, you will in fact enjoy the adrenaline. Whether you are working as conference interpreter or doing other jobs, a suitable amount of adrenaline will simply help us work better and faster.
Date: 03/10/2024 (Thu)
Time: 19:00 – 21:00
Venue: Room CBC, LG1/F, Chow Yei Ching Building
Language: Cantonese
Registration Session #1: https://hkuems1.hku.hk/hkuems/ec_hdetail.aspx?ueid=96441
Old School Wisdom, New Age technology
Language is both complex and marvellous. Some researchers argue that the unique function of understanding and using language can best be performed by the human brain. Conference interpreters won’t be replaced by machines, but those who interpret like a machine will. It takes constant practice and years of experience to master the skills of conference interpreting, which seem to create new neural pathways in the interpreter’s brain, something difficult for a machine to learn.
That said, IT is in fact very instrumental to translators and conference interpreters. In making the best preparations possible for a meeting by building glossaries, acquiring knowledge of the subject matter, and getting to know more about the speakers, conference interpreters do work more efficiently with IT. Many state-of-the-art computer-aided translation (CAT) tools, including electronic dictionaries, concordancer, translation memory, terminology database, and style guide, are useful for language professionals in the 21st century. By the way, don’t assume that you will always get accurate information by browsing the Internet. You won’t be fooled by AI after the sharing.
