本工作坊分第一章和第二章，各包含兩節，分別於上學期及下學期進行。由擁有超過30年翻譯經驗的張敬文博士將會親身傳授這門獨門武功。有興趣的同學，不論曾否接受傳譯訓練或是否具備相關經驗，都歡迎報名參加。

第一節: 會議傳譯員 能人所不能
Session 1: Conference Interpreters: Human Beings with Superpower
會議傳譯過去的主要形式是交替傳譯。在二戰結束後進行的紐倫堡審訊中採用了即時傳譯，可謂開創先河。審訊看似順利進行，其實背後全賴一班即時傳譯員提供專業服務，確保所有信息都準確傳遞。會議傳譯員一心二用，一邊細心聆聽講者發言，一邊將講者的發言翻成另一種語言，還要聆聽自己的聲音，以免錯漏。也許會議傳譯才稱得上是真正的特異功能，因爲傳譯員要同時聆聽、理解、分析、說話。
會議傳譯員要經過多年訓練和實踐，才能夠掌握所需技巧和知識。傳譯員要精通最少兩種語言，在電光石火之間作出反應，熟悉主題和相關詞彙，縱使不知道講者接著會說甚麼也能夠保持鎮定，在高壓環境下面對大量觀眾也可以舉重若輕。大家會發現，學會傳譯員這套獨門武功，不論是學習還是發展事業，定當無往而不利。
For most of history, interpretation was mainly done consecutively. The breakthrough finally came at the end of the Second World War when simultaneous interpretation was used at the Nuremberg Trials. On the surface, it all looks seamless. But behind the scenes, simultaneous interpreters work professionally to ensure that every piece of information gets across as intended. Conference interpreters split their attention by listening carefully to the speakers in one language and interpreting what the speakers say in another, not to mention listening to their own voice for quality assurance. Conference interpreting is arguably what we can really call superpower because interpreters are listening, understanding, analysing and speaking at the same time.
A conference interpreter acquires the necessary skills and knowledge through years of training and practice. These include an excellent command of at least two languages, responding in a matter of split second, knowledge of the subject matter and relevant terminology, staying calm while not knowing what the speaker is going to say, and enjoying the adrenaline while performing to a large audience under very intimidating settings ¾ you just name it. Participants will find the toolbox of a conference interpreter very useful to their study and career development.

同學們常常問我：「會議傳譯員會不會被機器取代？」我總是說：「如過你的譯文像機器翻譯，那麼你便會被取代。」會議傳譯不僅僅是翻字典。一些關鍵詞翻錯或者遺漏了，後果會不堪設想。要掌握會議傳譯的技巧，要不斷實踐，累積多年經驗。日子有功，我們進行影子練習、傳意不傳字、重組句子，信息便彷彿會在腦海中通過特別的途徑傳送，這是機器「學」不來的。語言既複雜又奇妙，有研究人員認為理解和運用語言這種獨一無二的功能，只有人腦才能執行。用傳統的方法學習傳譯，也許比市面上任何電腦程式更爲有效。
雖然在可見的將來，機器不大可能取代專業傳譯員，但我們的確可以利用信息科技提高工作效率。會議傳譯員總會做最好的準備，包括編詞彙表，熟悉主題，並多了解講者的背景。這些準備工夫對政治談判尤爲重要，傳譯員不能翻錯或遺漏某些重點。這裏順帶一提，不要以為網上的信息定必準確，講者會跟各位分享搜尋信息的竅門。
My students often ask me, “Will conference interpreters be replaced by machines?” I always say, “If you interpret like a machine, you will.” Conference interpretation is not just a matter of consulting the dictionary. When key words are misinterpreted or get “lost in translation”, the consequences can be catastrophic. It takes constant practice and years of experience to master the skills of conference interpreting. As time goes by, the effort of shadowing, paraphrasing and reformulating seems to create new neural pathways in the interpreter’s brain, something difficult for a machine to “learn”. Language is both complex and marvellous. Some researchers argue that the unique function of understanding and using language can only be performed by the human brain. Learning interpretation in the conventional manner may still yield better results than any currently available computer programme.
While it is unlikely that professional interpreters will be replaced by machines in the foreseeable future, we do work more efficiently with the help of IT. Conference interpreters always make the best preparations for a meeting by building glossaries, acquiring knowledge of the subject matter, and getting to know more about the speakers. Such preparations are particularly important when it comes to political negotiations because a conference interpreter simply cannot afford to misinterpret or miss an important point. By the way, don’t assume that you will always get accurate information by browsing the Internet. There are some tricks to share with participants.

Bio of Instructor(s) 導師簡介:
| 張敬文博士 (資深翻譯員及傳譯員) Dr. Cheung King Man BSc (University of London) MSc (University of London) JD (City University of Hong Kong) DBA (Curtin University of Technology) 張敬文博士於1987年加入香港公務員行列，於2003年退休，離任時為高級中文主任。1991至2003年期間，他派駐法定語文事務署普通話傳譯組，負責翻譯內地與香港政府的來往公文，並於內地與香港官員進行的高層會議上提供英語／普通話傳譯服務。 他於2005年完成有關公營機構改革的博士論文，獲澳洲科廷科技大學頒授工商管理博士學位，並於2008年以優異成績獲香港城市大學頒授法律博士學位。自2006年起，張博士先後在多間專上院校擔任兼職講師，包括城市大學、香港大學、香港恒生大學及香港浸會大學，教授有關翻譯及傳譯的學士和碩士課程。他亦先後爲法定語文事務部及廉政公署主持多個講座，講題包括經濟學、財經翻譯及會議傳譯。 Dr. Cheung King Man joined the Hong Kong Civil Service in 1987 and retired in 2003 as a Senior Chinese Language Officer. He was posted to the then Putonghua Interpretation Section of the Official Languages Division from 1991 to 2003. Apart from translating documents relating to various channels of governmental contacts between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China, he was also responsible for providing English/Putonghua interpretation services at high-level meetings between Hong Kong and Mainland officials. He was awarded a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree by Curtin University of Technology, Australia in 2005 after completing his doctoral thesis on public sector reform. In 2008, he was awarded the degree of Juris Doctor (JD) with distinction by City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Cheung has taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in translation and interpretation on a part-time basis since 2006 at various institutions, including City University of Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong, the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Baptist University. He has also conducted several workshops for the Official Languages Division and the Independent Commission Against Corruption on topics covering economics, financial translation and conference interpreting. | |
