Required Reading:
- Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan
- Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
As artificial intelligence becomes more like us, then becomes us, then becomes more than us, how will we interact with the avatars we create? Can we fall in love with them, or them with us? Be jealous of each other? Sacrifice ourselves for the other? Do A.I. beings have morals, and are we obliged to behave morally to them as if they were human? These are some of the questions addressed in two recent works of literature - Machines Like Me by Booker Prize winner Ian McEwan, and Klara and the Sun by Nobel Laureate Kazuo Ishiguro. The answers might surprise you.
Fascinating audio-visual elements will form part of the package for this Book Club, as will active student participation activities.
