Required Reading:
Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway

In Merchants of Doubt, science historians Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway tell the stories of acid rain, the ozone hole, second-hand smoke, and global warming. They use these landmark examples in post-war American history to explicate corporate-financed and organised scepticism about scientific research. By linking the tricks of tobacco companies and the denial of climate change, the authors imply that the far-right government and philosophy of free market economics could destroy the cause of environmentalism.
These stories will inspire students in Hong Kong to reflect on the local environmental agenda, from the lead-tainted water scare to the controversy of land reclamation.
