Book Club – The Jazz Age: the rise and decline of the American Dream
GE2018-36A
Book Club – The Jazz Age: the rise and decline of the American Dream
***Registration quota is full.***

Required Readings:

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Tales of the Jazz Age by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Alone among combating nations the United States emerged from World War I wealthier than before. Thus began the 1920s, defined not so much by a musical genre as by a mood of unrestrained optimism and, for the ‘beautiful people’, larger than life excesses (cf. Tales of the Jazz Age). Then, everything came tumbling down in the 1929 Wall Street Crash, and hope turned to tears.

Together, F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck, the bards of the age, chronicled the roller-coaster ride of the American Dream in the inter-war years–the descent from the spiritual emptiness of affluence in the twenties to the hard times of abject poverty in the thirties. A cautionary tale that no one should forget.

As is usual with the Book Club, great literature will be complemented by great music (a Jazz session in this case), a cinematic screening, and a potluck dinner. In addition to taking an active part in discussing the two novels, members of the group are each expected to lead a discussion of self-chosen chapters of Tales of the Jazz Age.
