Telephone Interviews

Some employers use telephone interviews to screen out candidates. Here are some behaviours that turn them OFF:

1.       Shouting 'Wai' when answering the phone;

2.       Avoiding an English-speaking caller by saying 'wrong number' and hanging up immediately. You are expected to answer telephone calls in a friendly, warm, and professional manner.  Greet the caller and indicate who is speaking. For example:

  1. "Good morning/afternoon. This is so-and-so (say your FULL name) speaking. Can I help you?". Speak clearly to indicate that you mean what you say; or

  2. Say 'Hello', announce your FULL name clearly and add 'Can I help you?', or

  3. Just say 'Hello', then announce your FULL name distinctly.

3.       Be accessible at ALL times; activate your voicemail when you are not available.

4.       If you cannot depend on your household for a professional reception of telephone callers, use only your mobile phone. You can then be sure that employers will be received appropriately.
